Volvo 3l. Trying to find TDC. Starter turns engine over too much to land on TDC.

As the title says, I can't see how it is possible to get a socket on the crank nut, with the engine in the boat, to find TDC. Am I missing something?

Have you tried a strap wrench on the pulley?

I find that a remote start switch of the "trigger grip" style offers a bit finer control.

Use a strap wrench as suggested!

(You will not want to risk breaking the center crankshaft bolt !)
