Checking out a generator

Does anyone know how to check out a used generator for a 1962 Evinrude 40 h.p. motor that it charges? I have a motor w/o the generator, but have found one off another motor, but have no history of it. The generator is a RK-24L.

You can run it like a starter motor just ground out the field terminal and apply pos to the armature the motor should spin. Just to be clear run a jumper wire from ground to the field terminal ground the chassis and touch battery pos to the arm post.

Hook up a volt meter to the two posts of the generator.
Also run a jumper wire from the "Field" post to a ground anywhere on the generator
Hold the pulley against a wire wheel of a bench grinder so that the pulley turns in the proper direction.
Observe the volt meter... it should peg the meter at 12v or more.

I`m not sure if that test will work if the generator is not polarized first? By using a battery that will polarize the generator at the same time.

The field coils circuit. "A" field is externally grounded by the regulator. "B" field is internally grounded and takes a different kind of regulator.
