I`m not sure if that test will work if the generator is not polarized first? By using a battery that will polarize the generator at the same time.Hook up a volt meter to the two posts of the generator.
Also run a jumper wire from the "Field" post to a ground anywhere on the generator
Hold the pulley against a wire wheel of a bench grinder so that the pulley turns in the proper direction.
Observe the volt meter... it should peg the meter at 12v or more.
