Was on the river today fishing a tournament and was loaded down with myself and the co. I was running in to beat the clock and had everything as it was running all day as far as trim and Jack plate. It would run 74 at 5800 rpm, but on my way in the tach was reading 6500, so I backed it down to 5800 and was only running around 55 mph. Could the tach be messed up? The motor runs fine.
 
Thanks Chris, it is analog and while running when I noticed it up to 6500-6800 I did try tapping it with no change or fluctuating.
 
Was running back to ramp and my hat blew off and boat was fine running 71-72 @ 5800 rpm, so I backed it down swung around to retrieve it. When I got back on it. Once I got it trimmed and running up to 70 is when I noticed the tach reading 6500. I had my trim exactly where it was before.
 
Sorry, read your question wrong. No I didn't run the motor. Makes since I probably should have. I havnt had the boat very long and havnt bought a flush kit yet.
