Hi everyone, I have recently picked up an 86' Mariner 15 I know there is ways to convert it to remote controls rather than tiller does anyone know where to find the kits or controls that will work. Also what about steering? I've heard that's mostly universal but I was wondering if there is something specific I should be looking for. Thanks in advance!

Need a serial #. If it is a mercury motor the conversion is fairly easy. If it is a yamaha built motor it will be much tougher.

Assuming it's a "Merc/Mariner"....

Merc used to have a "kit" to attach remote controls. A diagram of everything you need is on this websites page here: http://www.marineengine.com/parts/m...80999-usa/remote-control-attaching-components

(Merc still has it listed as part number 42805A6 with a list price of about 250 bucks) and found it listed on this site (marine engine) here for 230'ish bucks - http://www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=MER42805A+6

That will just get you the remote hook up for throttle and shift.

If you plan on keeping it "pull start" (which is the route I went with my 1991 15 horse when converted to remote) then you can use just about any Merc control box or any generic box (I found a used US Marine control - no keyswitch - for 35 bucks in a bargain bin).

If you want to add electric start you require (a wallet full of money and) a ring gear to add to your flywheel (part 3) http://www.marineengine.com/parts/m...280999-usa/crankshaft-pistons-and-flywheel-15 - , the starter (part 33), solenoid (part 20) and at least some cables to go to the battery. If you also want to be able to charge the battery you will require a lighting stator (part 31) and a rectifier (part 17) Those parts are listed here: http://www.marineengine.com/parts/m...a197112-thru-0d280999-usa/electric-components

The tilt tube on the non-remote models is a little short to handle a normal "steering in a box" from Teleflex, Uflex etc. The best route is to replace the tilt tube with correct length (20 bucks) plus you need the bracket that goes on the motor itself and the link arm plus the few fittings/connectors - basically everything on this page:

This is not an "inexpensive" endeavor. Even leaving it as a rope start is going to set you back a few hundred bucks if you go with a used/cheap control.
