Honda 15hp goes int limp mode then cuts out

Have an 02 15hp honda that runs on muffs for 5 mins, then starts missing (sounds like its going into de-rate mode) then after about 20 seconds it cuts out.
Only to restart first pull and repeat the process.
Pumps water well and stays cool. Replaced the temp sender and oil sender seems fine.
Is it a problem with the CDI?
 
It could be CDI getting warm and malfunctioning. But you should eliminate other possible causes before buying a new one.
Do you have a shop manual or a DVOM? Checking coil resistance values should be part of this troubleshooting.
Also, try running the outboard with the engine cover off and see if anything changes.
 
Have you pulled the thermostat and checked it? The thermostat may be stuck closed or full of debris and the motor may really be overheating....even though you say it is cool.

Mike's right (as usual).
The engine is SUPPOSED to "de-power" and then, 20 seconds later, shut itself off if it's overheating. Just as you describe.
You say it's running cool but we are asking how, exactly, are you determining that?
Tell us what it is you do to evaluate the engine's temperature?
