1978 Mercury 110 9.8hp runs but dies

Hi,

I need help diagnosing this problem. The engine starts OK, and runs fine for a few minutes, but eventually it starts stalling out and slowly dies. I can re-start it with some effort after it dies.

Unfortunately this motor gets very little use, it is fitted on my sailboat, so I only use it when launching or returning, and I only get the boat out in the water a couple times a year. It has been a couple years since she's been in the water.

I had mixed up fresh gas, so I don't think that is the issue. I'm careful to get non-ethanol gas and I put stabilizer it in, and I always dump the tank at the beginning of each boating year and put in a few gallons of fresh mixed gas.

I assume it's running under load with some throttle on when this happens? If so, it sounds like something is getting hot and failing.

Have you pumped the bulb when it started to die?

Jeff

Jeff,

Yes, it does happen under load. No, I have not tried pumping the bulb. If I pump the bulb, and it doesn't stall, does that point to a problem with the carburetor?
