1997 Johnson 115 Fast Strike - hot indicator

I just purchased a 1997 Johnson 115 fast strike (J115GLEUC) that the hot indicator comes on immediately after starting the engine. The boat itself has 4 light indicators that it cycles through when turning on the ignition. All the lights go out after it cycles but the hot will come on as soon as it starts. I know the motor is not hot as it's pumping water fine and couldn't possibly heat that fast but I'm not sure how to go about checking the sensors to see if that could be issue.
 
You could have a bad tach. OMC had problems with those doing that. See if you can borrow a tach some place to try.
