1990 Force 35 hp starter/shift bracket interference

Recently bought a boat with this motor attached. I think I might have the wrong starter. The shift cable bracket sits below the starter. With the starter installed, the shift cable can't pass under the starter to connect the cable to the shift linkage. The shift bracket cable clamp was installed on the bottom of the shift bracket which makes the clamp screws impossible to get at when installed.

The starter is an ARCO 5382, about 9 1/4 inches in length. Can anyone tell me the length of the starter on their 35 hp?

Good morning, Jerry

I don't have a good pic of the starter mounted, but I'll attach the best I have. The other pics show the starter sitting on the shift cable. I thought it was hitting the shift bracket, but it's the cable. The cable clamp was attached to the bottom of the bracket when I got the boat. I guess that might have gained 3/4 inch or so of clearance but not enough. I noticed one of the starter bolts broke off in the block which allowed the starter to pivot and gain a little more room.

I found the correct starter (I think) on Ebay at a great price, about $30 vs $150 to $175 for a new one.

Thanks for your help, I sure do appreciate you.

Tom

Glad to help, I didn't do much if anything!!
Good luck with the new starter.
Ah, but you've helped me in the past and I'm sure you will in the future. Your posts answering other questions on the forum have made the difference in a 300 pound paperweight and a working engine on my boat.

Got the starter in yesterday, swapped the bracket, and installed this morning. I'm not sure what the taller starter fits, but it definitely was not right for my 35 hp. Here's a pic of the starters, sorry for the cluttered background.

That one fits the 85 90 120 125 150

These forums help a LOT of people who couldn't afford to have a mechanic every time their stuff farted.

I use them a lot for everything from fixing my washing machine to fixing my diesel Suburban.

I learned how to change a natural gas dryer over to propane.

So much on the net.
