Default 1996 Force 75hp won't get to WOT

Can't find similar problem on any forum. Got it back from the shop and then couldn't take it out over winter due to circumstances. Finally in water and fired it up. Ran fine at the dock. Revved all the way up to about 5000rpm, sitting and tied to the dock and in gear. When I take it out on the lake, it refuses to get to WOT. Won't run faster than about 4000rpm. Tried cycling the throttle several times. Switched tanks to see if it was a pickup issue. No difference.

"got it back from the shop" ????
    What did they do?

Do a compression, spark test, post the results??

Run with out the tach hooked up.
Linkage working right, opening the butterfly in the carb all the way?

Can't find paperwork on the repair and memory not good on the details. Ran about $800 for replacing a number of parts, including a new starter. Started and ran on the muffs but circumstances prevented field test. Compression in 120s on all cylinders. Not missing. Spark visible on the spark test.
Seems something wrong with the linkage.
it isn't opening up all the way. When I run without the lid, can see it's got a little more travel needed. Manipulating the lever on the side of the carb by hand, the missing revs come back. 20 year old boat. Would the linkage be worn out or having jumped some threads? Nothing in the manual about lubricating the line between the motor and the throttle on the console. Seems to operate smoothly, just not getting full extension.
Do I need to go back to the installation procedure and uninstall and reinstall?
that would be easier than if something is sticking on the throttle plate. Doesn't hesitate getting up to speed but peaking at around 4200.

These links are from another site that has a good Force Forum.
You might get the answers for the setting the linkage there.
Read them and see if it helps?

    You change props?
You have a lot of "stuff" on board when boating?
"stuff" extra coolers, extra people, extra gear, extra fuel??
This "stuff" can slow you down a lot.

Similar problem from a guy on another forum: 4 overweight women and himself, the dog and 2 coolers with 2-3 cases of beer and an extra tank of fuel and fishing stuff. Said the boat was slow to get up on plane and couldn't figure out why??

    Really good video.
My Mercury/Force only has a single carburetor.
Sprung for a new tachometer to get better readings. Idles at 800 and top rpm in gear is right at 3800. Same tied to the dock or running. This is a 20' pontoon with just me and gas on board.
Tied to the dock, in neutral, it will rev to about 5000 rpm. Took the lid off and the carb throttle cam is right in line with the marks at idle and at WOT, even though the rpm is too low. Today, the max rpm in gear was the same even while twiddling the arm on the side of the cam, giving it a little more push even though the mark was level. A few days ago it seemed that the cam was not fully extending the actuator on the side of the carb. Problem not there today.
    Using treated, alcohol free gas.
Accelerated smoothly all the way up to the 3800 and then settled back down without any hiccups. Starts easily with only a second of pushing in to prime.
'Just not sure where to go from here. Easy stuff seems to be doing ok. Also no change in prop and it used to run fine on this one.

Frank was one of the best!!
    Man knew his Chryslers/Forces!

The tach, you sure the dial on the back is set right?
Even a sick motor will rev up in N
A motor should rev up to 5500+ in N

Check the dial on the back??

It was a discontinued but new Sierra tach. The tech said to set for 6P for 12 pole stator 2 stroke.

Try another spot on the dial.
    What other #s are there?

    I thought the 6 was for a 6 cyl.??

The instructions say to use the 6P for a two stroke with a 12 pole stator.
Confirmed it separately with a Sierra tech on the phone. The tach registers a little over 5000 when revved briefly in neutral. Only 3800 flat out in forward gear.

The back of the tach has 6P, 5P, 4P, 3P, and 2P positions. The instructions say to set for half of the number of alternator or stator poles.

Did this show on the tach?

You can't hurt the tach, try setting it on #3??

If it's revving up and not reaching full rpm's ?? what prop are you using? pitch?

Family issues took up a few weekends.
Max 3500 rpm tied to dock.
Compression 110 to 115 all cylinders.
    Spark jumped 7/16 gap.
    Fuel filter clean
    Fuel pump measures 6psi.
Timing at 30 at 3500 rpm, fast as it goes.
Carb linkage lines lining up at idle and open throttle where they ought.
    Fuel clean.
Starting to believe carb gunk is the problem.
Worried about not being able to get all the parts.
Main jet and throttle jet no longer available.
Mostly gaskets and the needle and some springs available.
Thought of cleaning out with steel wire versus buying drill bits the exact size ( .094 and .044) and gently reaming out the old ones.
Only two nuts and two hoses to get the carb off so I could try the wire first.

Tied to a dock you won't ever get to the max rpm.

    On iboats Force forum.
The top few posts cover a lot of things like static timing, link and sync.
Look there and see if something helps.

static timing is the best way to set the timing.

Things like load? bottom condition? trim set wrong? can affect the rpm's

That made a big difference. Up to 4500 rpm. Still a little shy of optimal but closer.
Load is two people, 12 gallons of fuel, trim ok.
still wondering if there's something blocking one of the jets.

Was this motor the original on the boat?
If not then you might have the wrong pitch???

Michigan Propeller will help you get the right prop?

I think they have a prop finder site??
