Bendent spring and balls 1979 Johnson 35el79a help don't where they go

I just bought a old fixer upper an tryn to rebuild the lower unit ... It was popping in full throttle anyway I started to disassemble lower unit after watching some helpful video on YouTube an Google . Came apart easy , an I tried to take it easy pulling shaft out so I could see how it went together but didn't see where they fell out . Diagrams on web don't show to good any help would b greatly appreciated

In the middle of the prop shaft is a hole. A spring goes in there and a ball on each side of it then slide the shift dog over them. Those are the shifting detents.
