Yamaha Pro 50 Question

I recently rebuilt a 1992 Yamaha Pro 50. The woodriff key for the flywheel fell out onto the top of the crankcase bearing while i was installing the stator and bent the bearing shield. I was able to pull the shield off and no damage was done to the guts of the bearing, so I packed it with marine grease and it seems to working just fine.... My question is, does that shield give the crankcase any air tight properties? When the stator goes on, there is a gasket at the base, and an oring that goes around the crank shaft. The reason I ask is my motor is having what seems to be a lean cough at idle and I cant find where there might be an air leak. The reeds are seating properly, but there is still a backfire that you can visually see through the #1 carb. (behind the butterfly). It only coughs at idle and it happens whether its warm or cold. Once you open it up it goes completely away. engine specs are....
