Extracting an impeller from a Merc 9.8 2 stroke

I am having trouble getting the old impeller out of a 1985 merc 9.8 2 stroke.

AFAIKT it should just slide up the driveshaft.

I tried prying with 2 screwdrivers, it moves about 1/2 an inch then stops.

Do I just use brute force or am I missing something?

I guess it's fouling on the key?

Cheers!

I'd lube it up and put some PB blaster on it. Then I'd just take my time and push it down - then pull it up. That 1/2" is probably the width/thickness of the impeller? Probably a burr in there on the shaft/impeller sleeve or key. All the puts I've changed just pull off - but some are stubborn. Also check on line ad look a the parts diagrams - just o be sure.

Good Luck!

Hi, I struggled with this a couple days ago.

Soak it with pb blaster, spray it between impeller and driveshaft. Do this a few times and be patient with it, took me around two hours but finally got it.

I used $4 harbor freight circlip pliers to pull the impeller out. The two notches on the end provided great places to grab the impeller from under the base of it. Squeeze then pull up.

What I found was corrosion between driveshaft and impeller (which has a metal sleeve inside). Probably last owner didn't grease the two. Glad I got to it now and not later!

Good luck and be careful.
