Not sure of the year, I think it is 2012 Honda 9.9 electric start long shaft, power thrust. Started and ran fine last fall when put it away for winter. Using fresh fuel, tries to start but sputters and dies, any help appreciated. Hours on the engine are very low, used for trolling kicker. thanks for help.

This sounds like the classic case of contaminated carb due to either running fuel with a bit of water in it (happens to all of us at some point) or the carb didn't get properly dried out before storage OR....both.

Try taking the carb drain screw completely out and spraying WD 40 into the float chamber using the straw that comes with the can. Spray it GOOD....meaniing....a BUNCH. DON'T worry, it won't hurt anything. Then put the drain screw back and locate the accelerator pump plunger pin on the side of the carb. Work the throttle while watching to see that the pin moves up and down with the throttle action. If it does or doesn't, pull up the little rubber "bellows" that covers the pin so that you can slip the WD-40 straw down into the accelerator pump piston cavity (the place the pin goes down into) and give a good GOOSH of WD. If you have some PB Blaster, squirt some of that down there too.

If the little pin didn't move with the throttle action, it means that the accelerator piston is stuck. Try either using a pair of needle nose pliers to grab the pin and push it down OR take a small pocket screwdriver and try pushing the piston by inserting it under the boot where you placed the straw.

DO NOT PUSH, TAP OR HAMMER DOWN ON THE PLASTIC BALL SOCKET THAT THE TOP OF THE PIN SITS IN. If you do, you will break the ball socket and they are NOT sold separately. You would have to buy a new carb.

If you can't get the piston to free up, the carb will need to be taken apart and cleaned and a new accelerator pump kit can then be installed.

If the piston moves up and down, re install the boot and see if the engine will now start and run. If not, the carb will need to be removed and properly cleaned.

Thanks for the help. After working on the engine we finally got it to start with ether and clean fuel treated with starbrite and stabil. It runs fine for a while then starts this chug-chug-chugging like its hitting on one cylinder. We took out the plugs and cleaned them. It ran good enough to make us think we could trust it to go fishing, thoroughly ruined that trip. As it stand now its doing the chug-chug-chugging, starts ok and idles, just won't run at hi rpm's and stalls at idle or any other speed.:confused::confused::confused:

Well, there's an outside chance there is a problem with the by start enrichment valve. But, I can't recall ever seeing one fail.

The by start is what Honda calls their automatic, electric enrichment valve. If that's confusing, think of it as a "choke". It is easily tested by removing it from the carburetor and applying 12 volts to see if the pintle extends. If it were bad, It COULD cause the symptoms you describe.

But, my money is on the carb needs a thorough internal cleaning and a "minor tune-up". Meaning a new gasket set and replacement "jet set".

Then, with clean, treated gas and proper storage methods, years of trouble free service.
