Hi all, I need some help with instrument wiring. I have a 1979 Johnson 150hp model J150TL79C that I picked up cheap runs good after a little work going to install on a buddies boat. Need info on wiring up tach, ammeter, maybe water temp. Thanks
 
You normally pick up the switched "hot" wire (purple) and ground wire (black) at the key switch. Never, under any circumstances connect to the black wire with yellow stripe. The tach signal wire is grey.

Forget the ammeter. A volt meter is much more useful and far simpler to hook up.
