According to my manual proper oil for this engine would be(for above 50 F) SAE 15W-40 GF-4 SM. On the engines oil filler cap only states SAE 15W-40 and SJ. SAE 15W-40 GF-4 SM oil is very hard tofind,as marine grade like quicksilver can not find at all. How different in fact are these engines to mercruiser, that has different requirements? asume its a GM marine block and it has vortec heads, wonder if the heads are somehow different from what GM produces for mercruiser? In any case wonder what oil You are using on these engines ? On PCM home page they only inform in the FAQ sektion like this " When the average temperature is above 50 degrees F., use a good quality SAE 15W-40 "SJ". So can forget about the GF-4 requirements?

Thanks for any feedback on this

How about this ? https://www.exxonmobil.com/en/marine/products/mobil-delvac-mx-15w40 . It's 15w-40 an API SM compatible, marine grade. GF-4 maybe not but does it matter?

The GF rating is from ILSAC, and 4 has been replaced by 5....typically, you find it called out but will be covered by "API Certified" starburst symbol...in other words, discount the GF-4 requirements.

Go for a brand name oil, 15W-40, with an API SJ or better rating....

finally, don't be surprised if you can only find SM or SN oils; they should both satisfy the SJ 'needs'....

Thanks. Most of the15w40 oil seams made for Diesel engines, but noted that MAG1 15w40 mentions also gasoline engines, API SN, so should be fine. So first run of the engine will be done with this oil.

Ayuh,.... I run an entire fleet of boats on Shell Rotella T, 15W-50,....

Never had any sorta oil problem,... just change 'em each season,...
