Replace exhaust manifold gasket?

I need to replace an exhaust manifold gasket on a 454xl. Did I read on hear that you could place a couple longer bolts through the manfold and slide it back to replace the gasket.

If so, that seems a whole lot easier than having to disassemble everything.

THanks,

Longer bolts may help but may not be "all that's needed".....biggest driver is why you need to change the gasket....

I think the gasket will pull "up" with just the two end bolts in, but backed off a 1/2 inch. But that depends on who made the gasket. I don't think mine had "hooks" for the end bolts. BUT, you can't clean either surface, and you can't do a simple flatness test with a straightedge with the big iron pieces so close together.

At least 2 long bolts with the heads cut off and a slot in the end for using a screw driver when used in place of 2 of the existing bolts helps a lot when removing and especially when installing an exhaust manifold. These long bolts with help to hold the new gasket in place and then to hold the manifold in place while installing the normal length bolts.
