Year from serial number

Correction! 9.9M model # 682cs 018206 is it 1980 or 1992? or am I way off?
The chart has the year at 1980 while the model number associated with the serial number has it to be a 1979 year model. Model # 7010209, http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Merc/Mariner/1979/7010209/parts.html

The S = Short Shaft.... The OEM service manual is part # 90-14679 the covers engines 8B (677)/W8 (677)/Marathon 8 (677) 9.9C (682)/15C (684)

Hi all, any help on the year of a Mercury 900 90HP 6 cylinder with serial # 1808978. The PO thought it was around 1977.

Thanks for any help.

Thanks haventaclue.

Looking at the serial number range on maxrules I now see that they went up to serial #4845300, when I first looked at boats . net they have serial # up to 1869775. So I was thinking that they ran from #175XXXX in 1965 to #186XXXX in 1978

Maybe the PO was mistaken with a rebuild date? After looking a little closer again, there is some kind of sticker (painted over) that 197X can just barley be seen under the paint with the right light and angle.

Just trying to figure out how much $$$ and effort we should put into it, after it setting in a garage for 14 years.

I have a 35 HP Mercury 2-cyl engine that seems like a mid 1980's, but can't find an exact year, but 1987 seems to fit parts-wise Would like to know for sure- Serial Number 0B342290

Thanks!

Hello all, just joined today after buying a bowrider with Merc. 115hp. Anyway my question is along the same lines.
The boat is a Doral...year 1999
The motor specs. stamped on the transom bracket has serial # 0t182650. When I do a look-up on this is comes up as a 2001
But also stamped on the bracket is the date 2004.
I'm not sure as what year is correct?
Any input would be greatly appreciated....thanks

The (serial) is really just a "production number" to indicate when it came off the line. The year/hp etc is NOT encoded into that number.

And yes, that number does equate to a "production date" in 2001. No idea why there would be a (2004) if it had anything to do with a production date. You say it's "stamped" into the bracket (as opposed to being on some sticker). If it's stamped in it could be a part number that just happens to look like a year...

Your correct galamb in that it is not an actual stamp on bracket but a sticker on the bracket. The 2004 is on the same sticker as the serial #. This sticker also has 115 ELPTO which I assume is hp and motor type. So I just assumed that the 2004 was the year of manufacture. Anyway thanks for clearing that up for me.
