With hose muffs out of the water it starts and runs good no missing, revs up ok. In water it idled ok then died, would not restart. Then with muffs again, started right up and black oily crud came out. What's up?

I have owned it for over a year and have been fixing the boat up first. It ran ok at first but it sat over the winter. Compression is low but equal in the 90s if i remember right. Cleaned the carbs and fresh gas. Checked the spark last year and it was good. New plugs and wires. Could back pressure when in water have an effect?

Try another gauge from auto parts store, They lend or rent them cheap.Make sure battery is fully charged, plugs out, ignition disabled, throttle wide open, try 3 different readings on each cylinder.

My brand new 1988 Johnson 150 never had 90 compression. Mid 80's . So that statement is off base. Now it's in the 70's and still runs fine. Most important is that the compression be within 15 % of each other.
