How to find serial number?

Hi, I have recently just bought my first boat, and I'm trying to work out the serial number (all that is visable is 917756 I am told there is a digit missing?? It the plate is a bit damaged, so this is all I can see.. I believe the engine is a 3 cylinder mercury 50. On The casing it says 'oil injected' but no oil tank :/
Someone please help! Haha!

Do you have the Id plate on the side of the swivel bracket?

Yes. But it is scratched/damaged, so I can't see all the writing and numbers..

Do you have pics of the cowl? You may be able to get close enough looking at decal designs?

What number "spot/area" is missing/damaged? Does the S/N really start with a 9 or could there be another letter or number missing in front of the 9?

There should also be a plug somewhere on the engine with the serial number stamped in...Should look something like this as an example, https://www.perfprotech.com/blog/ma...ry-marine-outboard-motor-serial-number-number

Well I rang a local outboard shop, and he said most start with the number 9. or two letters?! I'm pretty sure it is a nine But The plate is pretty marked! Looks like it has had something rubbing against it for a while! If I could upload photos, I'm sure it would help? But I'm using my iPhone and it doesn't seem to work. Maybe I could send you the pics of the engine/casing to your email?
