reverse on mercury outboard

I have 50 hp mercury an have lost reverse when in forward works great neutral ok but when putninreverse nothing happen any idea what the problem is
 
Did you disconnect the shift cable and see if it hits reverse manually? Put the control straight up neutral and disconnect the shift cable and then while spinning the prop try and shift the motor into reverse. What is the serial number of the engine?
 
Post some more information such as, ---Was the lower unit off for water pump work ?---------------When did it work last ?--------------Is there a possibility that water was in the lower unit that froze ?----------Have you taken the prop off to look at the bearing carrier ?
