volvo 280 lower unit shimming

Good evening, new here.

I have a Volvo 280 and I am changing the lower unit and I have a question about shimming. Per the manual I understand on how to get the "A" and "B" measurements and subtract to come up with the clearance dimension. But I'm trying to wrap my head around the term "negative" result (loading). I am assuming that when the lower unit is bolted to the intermediate housing, that I will need a preload on the tappered roller bearing, which will also seat the angular contact bearing below, which will also allow no axial play in the vertical shaft? I have searched the forums that do help explain the procedure etc, and it should be simple but I have a brain fart on this one.

Here is an example, please tell me if I am wrong.

Volvo manual says "a clearance dimension of .02mm shall be aspiring to attain"

Lets say I have:
B=9.85mm
-A=9.25mm
clearance=.60mm

Clearance=.60mm
+.02mm
shim thickness=.62mm

The .62 shim thickness gives a .60mm to fill the space above the race and another .02mm for bearing preload.

So in short I want to make sure that when the lower and intermediate are bolted together that I will be preloading the bearing(s), as opposed to having play or slop.

Thanks much!!
Larry
