need guidance in setting distributor advance timing... '75 850-4 cyl

I disassembled the motor to do a general inspection, and to install new rings and restrictors. (I also disassembled the carbs and soaked them in barrymans) I now have it all back together with the flywheel and distributor timed properly to one another, and ready to start.
but before starting it I want to check the initial idle spark setting and the max advance, and would like to know the easiest way to do that....

I have heard it can be done while cranking, or on the muffs... I have the seloc manual but it isnt the easiest to understand.

also, the distributor turns fairly stiff (carb shafts turn easy) and I was hoping someone could tell me how to make the advance easier to turn... I dont want to just pump more grease into the fittings as it hasnt seemed to help so far... is there a friction adjustment somewhere in it? Thanks
