OMC 140 backfire when cranking over

Recently bought a 19' Crestliner with a old OMC 4 banger. When I turn the key to crank over the engine it seems like 3 out of the four cylinders are working. When cylinder 2 goes up on its compression stroke it the engine almost stops cranking over and a spray of gas goes back up and out of the carb. Not sure what this could be. I took off the valve cover to see if one of the valves were stuck but all of the rocker arms are moving when I crank over the engine, nothing looks out of the ordinary with the valves. Ayuh,.... Have ya got the plug wires on in the proper order,..??

Have ya done a compression test,..??
