Year of a 40HP Mariner Outboard

Hi, could some-one please tell me how I can find the year of manufacture for this engine? The one plate is marked " Mariner 40, 676 S 007070, Made in Japan" and the other " Made in Japan for Mariner International CO. Fond Du Lac, Wis, USA" Thank you:confused:
 
Hi, it has a large square exhaust just above the prop and then another smaller one about halfway up the shaft. Hope this makes sense, I'm new to boat engines. Regards Ivan
