Slack between steering handle and shafti

I have a rip tide 55pound thrust. Just a standard unit, no auto. When I turn the steering handle the shaft to the motor does not turn at first. There is slack, like something is loose. This happened when it was new and under warranty. The dealer said they shortened the shaft and re bolted the shaft back on. What causes this, and is this something I can fix my self? This unit is about 7 years old, but not used very often. Is this a common problem with minn Kota? This is my first minn kota.

I just received a Minn Kota Riptide 40/SC/T I bought used, and it has the same problem. There is about 2 cm slack between the control-housing and the shaft. Did you find out what caused the problem, and how to fix it?
