Gear gentleman,
I am replacing the cylinder head cover of the above outboard and would like to know what type of sealants/loctites to use between the cover and the cylinder head. Thank you for your advise and have a happy New year.

The gasket new??
Then if the surface is clean and not warped?
You need none.
The new gasket comes complete with it's own sticky.
Make sure the torque is done in the right sequence and ends at 20#
Or 225 In.#

BUT!! being as it's an 85 and guessing it's an 85hp??
The condition of the surfaces might not be the best??
Salt water use?
Then I'd use a Black RTV Even the Red heat resistant RTV will work
A thin line where the outline of the gasket sets will help seal the tiny holes.

Do a compression test after it's done.
Then after a few hrs. re-torque it'

Since it's not a lot of torque use the same bolts.
I also use marine grease on the threads.

My neighbors pontoon sat on a lift in salt water for YEARS without flushing.
He brings it to me and says it won't pee???

I open it up after it overheats.
It was so clogged with crud/salt the lower passages were sealed off.

The corrosion was so bad I had to use double gaskets and extra RTV
Pretty important to flush if you get in shallow water.
The corrosion can ruin it.

The second boat on the other lift had a 200 Yam.
Again no flushing for YEARS!!

There is a bushing that actually corroded so bad it seized the motor and wouldn't allow it to turn over.
It took about an hour to remove the lower and the cavitation plate ended up breaking off.

Proper maint. is needed or corrosion will destroy your toys.
