2002 Mercury 40hp /prop movement?

I have a 2002 Mercury 40hp...2 stroke...two cylinder.
it has a slower than rpm knocking sound when put into
forward or reverse. NOT in nuetral...NOT when prop is off...
NOT when rpm is bumped up 300 rpm.
(the prop spins free and no sound in Nuetral)
(In Forward, the prop clicks on the dogs one way, and turns
the engine over hard the other way.like it should)
(In Reverse if I turn the prop either direction, it turns the engine
over hard.it does not click on the dogs if turned counter
clockwise."SHOULD IT"?
if I put it in Reverse manually or with the remote cable I have
the same result!??
(I changed the lower unit oil and it was a clean as when I put it
in a year ago. The magnetic drain plug had nothing on it.)

In reverse it does NOT click.---------Start the motor on a hose and use a broomstick held to your ear.------------Probe around lower unit for gear noise.----Probe around powerhead for bearing noise.-------Oil injection on this motor?--------Noise coming from the boat ?

The sound is 100% lower unit gears/dog.
The single "clunk" sound you hear when I pop it in gear
is the same sound I hear two times a second when it's idling
in gear. If I raise the rpm's slightly, it's gone. Or take the
prop off, it's gone, or put it in nuetral it's gone.
Im going to buy a Mercury Black MAX prop with the newer
FLO TORQ REFLEX HUB kit for 40-60 hp outboards to see
if its gear backlash. The motor runs fantastic, I just troll alot
and hate the kluncking sound.

Is this clunking something new in l/u, Is the hub slipping inside of prop, then catching,It's making noise in forward and reverse, correct? Is shift rod and linkage adjusted properly?
