1987 48spl gear case

took gear case apart and found no broken parts, the problem was only forward gear or was it only reverse (had a spare gear case and just swapped units this summer now the other one is bad got to fix one), this happened in a wierd way, while putting boat on trailer with motor tilted the motor dropped. motor was in netral. i checked prop and skeg , with no apparent damage. next time out the problem appeared, so to be clear, only one direction worked, sorry can't be sure of which one, any way put in gear and nothing, no grinding, no clicking, prop ok used it on other unit. any ideas what might of happened?
ordering seal kit, clutch dog pin and spring. water pump. any other parts for general rebuild needed. can get pics on reguest

It may have snapped a shift cable from control box

when i swapped lower units, cables worked, ok, did have clicking going into reverse and some times had to try several times to get it in gear, but adjusted that out at cable connections, now i'm wondering?
