1962 283 Chevy rebuiding

I will assume that you want to know if old heads will work with modern fuel. The answer is, no. Do to the absence of Lead in modern fuel, you will have to have hardened valve seats installed in your old heads. I would actually look for a new set of heads.
 
The 283 is a small journal engine. It did however, use the F/T pistons.
And yes..... the valve seats will require replacement.
Unless there is a need or desire to keep this boat original, I would would go with a much later SBC..... perhaps a 5.7L.

In either event....... say NO to these.

this means that I can not have my valve seats hardened, but I must purchase (on-line? suggestions?) two new heads that will fit with my 1962 engine?

You have to find a very good machine shop and have them cut your heads and install hardened seats. If it is not done right the seats will come loose and it will all be over very shortly.

Heads are not expensive.

2 new (or used) cylinder heads must be correct for the 283's 3.875" bore.
Also, the combustion chamber volume must be correct so that the OEM F/T piston profile can be used!


DO NOT let anyone talk you into the GM Full Dished piston for this Engine.
