fuel-water separator filter

I just repowered my 91 Chris Craft Crowne with a 2003 Mercruiser 496 HO Mag, and use only supreme gas. Do I need to use/install a fuel water separating filter? I have been told with this engine, I can use regular gas, any truths to this?

A fuel/water separator is highly recommended, You can use regular if engine does not knock. The compression ratio usually dictates which fuel to use.

Ayuh,.... Considerin' boats are surrounded by water, not runnin' a fuel filter is insane,....

Yer motor probably has a knock sensor, so regular gas probably would be ok,....

Ethanol free gas is even better,....
If yer runnin' ethanol gas, the filter means even more,....

Ditto on the external fuel/water separator. Unlike cars and trucks, the fuel tank on a boat is open to the air (by law.) Consequently, the continuous expansion, contraction of the fuel will form water vapor in the tank which will condense and fill the bottom of the tank over time. The jostling of the boat underway will lace the fuel with a certain amount of water that needs to be separated out prior to combustion.
