oil in fuel filter, carb, and fuel tank

2001 40 HP 2 cycle Merc
Yesterday I put in the water and the engine would crank but not start.
Found oil in fuel filter, carb, and by color, fuel tank.
Cleared filter and carb, changed plugs and it ran rest of day, but very smoky.
Any ideas. looking at tubing, it shouldn't happen.

Your running a 2 stroke gas and oil are mixed together and burned at the same time, And it's supposed to smoke. This is normal

I have been running 2 system engines over 20 years. There is a different between normal 2 cycle smoke and the smoke screen I was leaving behind.
