mercury 50hp thunderbolt

hi ppl i have bought a boat with a 50hp mercury on it, but the guy who i got it off said he put it on reverse just before he stopped and now it stuck in gear ?? any ideas

Disconnect the shift cable and see if you can move the shift arm. If you can and the L/U shifts, you probably have an issue with the shift cable or control box.

If the shift arm won't move by hand, you're probably gonna need to drop the L/U for inspection. Then you can get at the shift shaft and turn it to see if you can get it out of reverse.

so grained the gearbox oil all fine ,so took the lower unit off but nothing in there will move its seized solid,,,, any ideas or is it new gearbox??
