Remove twisted off shaft from powerhead

I hit a submerged rock at close to full RPM and twisted the drive shaft off up in the female portion that goes into the powerhead. I have the lower unit off and can see the piece that needs to come out but don't see how to get up there to get it. Can I remove the mid-section housing without removing the powerhead.
 
What motor do you have. But i will say no the powerhead is usually bolted to the midsection. So pulling the powerhead is your only choice.
