    What's involved in changing the reduction gear on a 71 ? Would it be worth the effort to swap a 1 to 1 for a 1.53 to 1? They seem to be more readily available and cheaper. Thanks to all.

    a reduction unit makes the whole assembly much longer....the 1:1 gears are usually installed on smaller light weight hulls...the reduction gears on bigger, heavier hulls....changing the gear ratio means getting a new prop (or repitching the old one - maybe)....

    finally, under normal circumstances, a gear that's just worn out can be overhauled very economically.....lots of unknowns buying a gear from 'john doe'...
