how to know serial #

I need an impellar for my 1988-1990 evinrude 15 hp outboard and my #'s are washed off the tag anyone have an idea of how to know. Lady at the marine place tells me she can't help me if she has no #'s
 
All 15hp engines before, thru, and after (right around the 1990 year given) your year range use the same impeller......PN 386084.
 
Part numbers are looked up by MODEL number. Once in a great while, there may be a mid-year engineering change within the model year run. In such a case, the serial number comes into play, telling exactly when in the model year run the change was made. The lady was covering her b___ in asking for the serial number so as not to make a mistake. Or she really meant to say model number.

A really good parts man would not even have to look it up. He would go straight to the bin and pull out a 15hp impeller.
