Mechanical Fuel Pump Issue

Hi all I have a issue with my mechanical pump after hours of checking and checking I have connected a clear fuel line to the inlet of the fuel pump and cranked the engine only to see that the pump is drawing the fuel 5 or so inches up the line and then blowing it back out. Would this indicate a defective fuel pump or is there a simple explanation like an air lock or something similar? Any help would be appreciated

Try connecting your fuel line to a portable fuel tank which you would position higher than the fuel pump so that you have a gravity feed to the fuel pump.
The fuel should flow down to the pump and then see what the fuel pump does when you crank the engine.
If you have a float bowl, I would take it off and see if there is gas in it, and clean it up.
Engine starting may depend on gas in the float bowl and the fuel pump may only run properly when the engine is running.
