Help mounting 9.9 kicker. (throttle cable problems)

I have a 74 SeaRay SVR that I am trying to put a new kicker on. (same model as before). It's a 1994 Yamaha 9.9 4 stroke w/ manual tilt and remote control.

There is a hole in the upper transom right near the kicker so cables have a clear shot.

The problem is that the throttle and shift cable are so stiff they are difficult to wrangle in. Once I get them in turning the motor puts so much strain on them they can barely even hold, and rubs against the cutout really badly.

How are these cables suppose to be mounted?

I can't figure it out for the life of me.
