Mercury 9.8 Starting problems

My motor sometimes starts on the first pull, sometimes not at all. Sometimes it starts, but then dies. Since this is new for me, I would like to know what the correct starting procedure is, on cold or hot days. When it runs, it runs fine. So please help me get it started.
 
Pump primer bulb till firm,set throttle to start,full choke till it sputters,less &less choke till it runs smooth when it's cold outside or engine is being started for first time of day.Advancing throttle a little will help till engine is warm enough to idle smoothly on its own.
