Engine over heating please help!

Hey guys I have a volvo penta inline 6 . The model with three carbs. The boat hasnt seen water for a year and was just taken out a few days ago (first time its seen salt). Motor itself ran great. About 15 minutes into being on the water the engine temp maxed out on the gauge and the engine started smoking and steaming. Obviously overheating. I did a quick on the water change of the impeller (the old one had degraded), but it did not fix the problem. It was still overheating. What else could it be? Please help!

most likely place to check is the water neck fitting. This is the hose fitting on the drive itself where the raw water hose between the drive and the transom connects. Pin hole leaks develop over time and you get a vacuum that defeats the raw water pump. check or better yet, change the hose itself while you are there if the hose is not recent.

The water neck fitting attaches to the "main suspension fork", not the drive !

I fully agree… this is a very likely suspect.

Don't forget to replace the special beaded gasket that fits underneath it.
