1988 70 hp mercy trim motor failure

The original trim motor on my 1988 Mercury 70 hp outboard has failed. My mechanic says the original motor is obsolete and cannot be obtained or replaced. He tells me that the entire trim assembly was updated by Mercury and that is the only thing that is available to resolve my issue. That entire assembly is $1800, plus installation. Is that my only option?

Wow! If these fit my old outboard, that's absolutely amazing!! How can I be sure that it will fit before ordering?

I notice some of these units talk about converting from a three wire system to a two wire system. Where could I find diagrams to explain this procedure?

Thank you for your extremely prompt response. And I am really disappointed in my mechanic.
