1990 OMC 5.8 liter boat engine

The temp gauge fluctuates , could it be the connection on the heat sensor? It seemed to be working correctly at first, but after a bumpy ride , it started to fluctuate, and at some times not reading a temp at all.

It could be either at the engine or behind the dash on the gage. If it was the sensor it would normally provide an incorrect reading (High or low) or none at all. Check the connections.
