Wooden Deck Spacing Material

Many years ago I remember working on teak decks where we would sand them until the black material between the deck boards showed like new. What was that spacer material and where can I buy some?
 
I was thinking about my earlier reply of generic seam compound -- I think that was used more on varnished mahoghany foredecks of runabouts and so forth. Try Googling "marine polysulfide" -- I think that's more like the rubber compund that johnnygjr is speaking of.
