Mariner 30hp - what year is it

Hi Folks,

I have a Mariner 30hp outboard. I would like to remove and clean the carb but would like to ensure that I can get a carb rebuild kit in case the gaskets get damaged or I need to replace other parts of the carb. Unfortunately I don't know the year of the motor. Can someone help? The plate on the motor shows the following info:
30E0 689 S 108214
If someone is able to help decipher this can you also let me know the resource you used? Would like to know for future reference.

Also, if anyone can direct me to where I an find carb kit for this motor, it would be appreciated

Thanks
David

Hi, Your engine serial number is coming up as model number 7030707 which makes it a late 1986 to early 1987 engine year depending on what avenue one searches for the exact year. The computer system says 87 while the chart says 86.
Here's three places that helps me find your engine year to match your parts catalog number,
http://www.marineengine.com/parts/mariner-outboard-parts/30a/689105325-thru-689530100---ml
http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Merc/Mariner/1987/7030707/parts.html

Using the chart linked below, Since your number 1082 is under the 1083 for 1987, it would be referenced as an 1986 but it's so close to the next following year the computer search picks it up as an 1987.
30A E 689-107569 - 1986
30A EO 689-108309 - 1987

Thanks much boat_tech. I see how you determined the year from the table here http://www.autorepairmanuals.biz/page/608045 , and then used this site http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Merc/Mariner/parts.html to determine the model number. However, if the year could be either 86 or 87, and the "EO" designator from the motor's serial number helps to determine the model number, how did you arrive at selecting the model number 7030707 rather than the other two possibilities?
1986
7040706 EO

1987
7030707 EO
7040707 EO

That my friend is a trade secret.:eek:

To help you with the model numbers below, The first model number you posted fits a 1986 40 HP engine model not 30 HP like you have. How do I know? With these outboard engines, The third and fourth numbers are the HP of each engine while the last number is the end of the that model "year"... In this case the highlighted numbers below tells the story.
1986
7040706 = 40 HP 1986

1987
7030707 = 30 HP 1987
7040707 = 40 HP 1987

Ahhhh. Thanks again, and thanks for completing the picture.
Btw, went ahead and cleaned the carb yesterday. Running much better and didn't need the kit after all. :)
Good to know how to find the proper one now though!!!

Thanks boat_tech.

Perhaps you can help with my problem. My motor runs great on muffs out of the water. It will also start and run great in the water initially. However, if I drive for about 20 minutes, slow down and change gears into neutral, the motor stalls and won't restart. I think this is due to over-heating, but there is water coming out of the tell-tale port.
I was planning on replacing the water pump and thermostat, but your thoughts would be appreciated.

If you believe replacement of these parts would be appropriate, can you confirm my selection of parts?:

thermostat:

Before you spend$$, Troubleshoot your engine. Place your hand in telltale stream, If you can hold it there indefinitely you should be alright, Hold hand on cylinder for a7 second count, If your hand does not get scoulded your fine. A infrared temp gun is a valuable tool to add to your toolbox,20 bucks at harbor frieght

Not sure about holding my hand on the motor, but will check the tell-tale. 😊
Perhaps you can comment though if an outboard will stall if it overheats. Is there a protection mechanism in the case of overheating ?

Some outboards go into slow mode, The ecm controls the throttle by cutting the rpm to1/2,some outboard engines have waring lights and buzzers, High heat on engine will make the electronics go crazy causing all kinds of issues

Hi all. New to boat ownership and having a fit finding the year of my Mariner. Serial Number is 689 L 550150. Model Number is 7-030312S. It's a 30hp, and I believe an ELO. I've tried the above sites suggested but can't seem to nail it down. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Okay thanks for the information. I'm looking for a power trim for it, the one on the boat does not work, would you know the part number and perhaps where I could find one?
