Trying to drill out the stripped brass lower shift cable connector. It seems that the outer jacket has wires in it I guess for strength. I cut the connector close on both sides but having a problem drillling the shell out. Do I need harder drills than high speed steel. Thanks for any help given.

Well you have to remove the steel wires first use a drill bit for that size.
DO NOT USE A 1/4 X 18 PIPE TAP
You need the 1/4 x 18 NPS, the drill for the 1/4 x 18 STRAIGHT TAP is 29/64

Thanks for your help I purchased the proper tap and tap drill. The problem I was having was the drill would catch the wires and put it off center.
What I did was stopped trying to drill and used a dremel with a cone stone. This removed all the wires and then the drill stayed on center. The housing is ok now and ready to move on with the project.
