Evinrude tachometer install

I have a 1990 evinrude 175 XP I installed a
new tachometer but cannot get it to work I tried
changing settings on back but only get sporadic readings
in one position can anyone clue me in?
 
To guy with heat alarm on Johnson motor
u most likely have a bad heat sensor if you have good
water pressure disconnect the heat sensor
wire it's on one of the heads one or two whit and brown
wires and run motor on high it should run fine had same problem
on my 175 evinrude

Did you use the wiring harness from the controller and does you voltage regulator work
