Default Thornycraft T150 diesel engine sputters and dies

We have a problem with our Thornycroft T150 diesel engine. After running the engine (engaged at 2K RPM) without problem for a period of time (could be up to an hour or more), suddenly the revs drop drastically and the engine begins to sputter. Sometimes playing with the throttle we can slowly bring the revs back up, but often the engine will just die. We’ve checked just about everything we know: cleaned the fuel separator, replaced the fuel filter, disassembled and reassembled the fuel pump – but no change. We've also tried attaching a jerrycan directly to the fuel pump (bypassing the separator and filter), and the same occurs. Seems fuel is not reaching the injectors. Could it be that the fuel pump fails intermittently?

Please help with any suggestion you may have.

    Thanks
    David

Hi DAVID, BEST THING TO TRY IS A CLEAR HOSE ABOUT 3" LONG BETWEEN THE LIFT PUMP AND PRIMARY FILTERS. IF THAT SHOWS NO AIR IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE PULSATOR DIAPHRAM IN THE LIFT PUMP IS BAD OR LASTLY IF AN INJECTOR HANGS IT WILL SEND COMPRESSION BACK INTO THE INJECTION PUMP. USUALLY YOU CAN FIND WHICH INJECTOR IS BAD BY TOUCHING THE HIGH PRESSURE LINES GOING TO EACH INJECTOR. ONE WILL BE NOTICEABLY HOTTER THAN THE OTHERS. IF THATS THE CASE REBUILD ALL INJECTORS!

Don't know your engine... But if it has a stop solenoid, sometimes when they are failing, engine acts like you described. The stop solenoid shuts fuel off or on in the injector pump. If it stalls and will not start, check injector lines between pump and injector. See if fuel is being delivered to injector. If you have fuel to the injector pump, but not to the injectors, you have a stop condition in the pump.
If not a stop solenoid, you may have a stop lever on the pump connected by linkage that may be loose or out of adjustment.
