Default 1gm 10 takes forever to start

hi all. ive just bought a little 22ft yacht with a 8hp yanmar 1gm 10. its no in the water yet as im trying to start it without having to run the battery flat each time .ive tried bleeding it and can only get fuel to the second point with the little finger pump thing but cant get it to the injector that way,so ive been turning over the engine to get it to the injector. the pump lever does'nt get any stiffer or feel like there is any pressure is this normal? i cant see any fuel leeks from joints. when its started it seems to run ok. any ideas what to try?

Diesels need 3 things to start. Fuel, heat and compression. Are you getting fuel to the injector? Loosen the line running to the injector while cranking. Make sure the stop lever and linkage is in the run position. The engine needs enough compression to raise the temperature above the ignition point. As engines age, some compression slips past the rings. Usually glow plugs or block heaters solve this problem (more heat, less compression needed). Also, the engine needs to turn fast enough to build pressure before too much escapes past the rings. Use ether sparingly. It rapidly raises compression above normal. Too much will break rings. Then you need it every time. You should be able to start the engine with the hand crank. Don't burn up the impeller.
