1999 25hp Mercury no start/spark

I've got which a 99 25 2 stroke that I'm not getting spark I've already eliminated the possibility of the kill switches no I'm basically leaning towards the stator or box on the side.. Anyone mess with these before? I should add that the guy that owns this had a battery melt down over night trying to charge it and the main starter wires melted together which I've replaced to get it to crank over just no spark...any help I would appreciate it thanks
 
Melted wires sounds very bad. I would check the main fuse first. Is it remote controlled or a tiller version? If it is remote you can unplug the remote harness and jump it to see if it has spark now. Otherwise you will need to start checking each component on the ignition system using the manual. Good luck! You will figure it out.
