35 Johnson shifter rod

Hello. I have a 1979 35 hp Johnson. The shifter rod came undone at the top. I assume I have to remove the power head to access the pin that fell out. Any ideas or comments would be greatly appreciated.
 
That's what you have to do. Make sure you use a new stainless steel cotter pin, and a new lockplate on the screw. You might as well also replace the o-ring on the shifter shaft while you are in there. You also will need a new powerhead gasket.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. Where is the best place to purchase these parts? Also, can the head be taken off while still on the boat? I knows it sounds like a dumb question, but after I looked at it, I wasn't sure
